LEADERSHIP
DEVELOPMENT THE CHALLENGES
Who
is a leader? What skills, characteristics, and competencies are
necessary for leadership? Is leadership about what you do or who
you are? Can I learn to be a leader? Can I be a leader without learning?
How do my values and the values of my organization affect my leadership?
How does a group of people move from disconnection or conflict
to a sense of community and team spirit?
These
are some of the underlying questions that surface as we work with
nonprofit executives and boards, business leaders and management
teams.
The
presenting issue may be about a specific difficult challenge or
the need to take on responsibilities for the first time. A nonprofit
Board may be faced with hiring a new CEO for the first time, a strategic
plan may call for a different skill set and level of competence
in an organization, business partners may be struggling with how
decisions are being made or not made. Anticipated expansion may
present the need to change what are considered "best practices"
in an organization.
LEADERSHIP
DEVELOPMENT HOW IT WORKS
CoachWise
works with organizational leaders and future leaders in small groups
to facilitate their understanding of changes happening in their
work and their lives. We provide a forum for conversations about
the skills, knowledge, and behavior that will allow them to provide
even greater value to their organization as these changes occur.
This process is complemented with appropriate tools and customized
interventions for the client.
| For
individuals and small groups we facilitate leadership development
through a focused learning process. This may include using assessment
tools and designing a structured Development Plan. |
|
Because
people develop best when they learn while doing, the heart of the
Development Plan may use challenging job tasks or special assignments
as opportunities for learning and growth. Learning aids include
recommended reading, a variety of development tips, use of feedback
and role models, and development opportunities inside and outside
the organization.
CLIENT
TESTIMONIALS
"We
have worked with Mary Helms off and on over the past 10 years. During
this time, she has coached us individually and collectively on challenges
that have ranged from the very concrete to the most abstract, from
the purely organizational to the very personal.
"Mary
has helped me and the organization I lead to build toward greater
coherence through connecting the day-to-day realities of producing
the work with our mission, understanding how routine decisions affect
and are affected by strategic decisions and making choices to do
things differently, based on careful consideration of values and
needs."

"Mary
has provided coaching and reflection as one on the outside looking
in, bringing news as one on the outside looking in, bringing news
to us of other places new processes are succeeding. She has raised
good questions and worked with us as we found answers for problems
we encountered. In addition, she has worked with us to rebuild our
Board after a difficult time for the organization."
"Mary
is an accomplished listener and is able to translate what she hears
into action steps. She knows this community and is able to locate
people who know the people who have what we will need at any point.
She is a valued consultant and has become a friend of our organization.
I would recommend her work to anyone."
